    In 1895, 10 professional golfers and one amateur played in the first U.S. Open in Newport, RI. Shortly thereafter, tournaments began to pop up across the country. True, Tim is not Mr. Warmth and he can spin sentences that seem to have no beginning or end -- he is, after all, an economist, lawyer and politician by training -- but in my mind he has one of the best track records of any commissioner in sports.

    PGA Tour - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    The tour began in 1929 and at various times the tournament players had attempted to operate independently from the club professionals. With an increase of revenue in the late 1960s due to expanded television coverage, a dispute arose between the touring professionals and the PGA of America on how to distribute the windfall.
